Following a successful GP2 Asia Series campaign in early 2008, Kobayashi secured his first GP2 Series victory in only the second race of the season. Starting strongly from pole position in the sprint race at the Circuit de Catalunya, Kobayashi crossed the finish line in first place. This victory came after a controversial incident involving defensive driving from his former Euro Series teammate Romain Grosjean following a safety car period. As Kobayashi attempted to pass Grosjean at the end of the pit straight, the Frenchman made multiple defensive moves, forcing Kobayashi to take evasive action. This led to a drive-through penalty for Grosjean, ultimately handing the win to Kobayashi.
